January-end North Shore update

Crossbill-Mania continues in Long Branch at 7P – folks walking up and down Ocean avenue with Scopes, Bins and Cameras in hand… Now the flock seems to have taken up residence in the pines behind the maintenance buildings.

Snow-covered Sandy Hook is quiet. Some good looks at raptors (Peregrine Falcon, Cooper’s Hawk, possible Harrier) as well as large flocks of Robins, a few Cedar Waxwings and some Sparrows foraging in the high grasses.

Lake Takanassee, Wreck Pond, Lake Como, etc are all pretty much frozen over, with some patches of open water. Where there is open water, you can find Canada Geese, Herring Gull, Ring-billed Gull, Great Black-backed gulls, Hooded Merganser, Mallards, Black Ducks, American Wigeon, Coot, Ruddy Duck,  and a Pied-billed grebe.
