Day 3: Chasing the woodpecker, crane and begniet

I woke up early (pre dawn) in hopes of catching the red cockated woodpecker colony at DeSoto Forest. Unfortunately, no luck on that life bird chase. That would have been a great bird to have since they are native to this area. I’m not sure what I could have done better but all I saw were red-bellieds.

Afterwards, I headed over to see the Mississippi Sandhill cranes.. I had been given the advice that they are best seen in people’s yards and not the refuge and sure enough… There were 2 standing in someone’s front yard. They tend to be darker and in pairs (vs the greater sandhills.) some other yardbirds were killdeer, meadowlark and a woodcock.

Afterwards, on to Slidell and New Orleans, Louisiana for some r&r and great Cajun food! Bird wise, the car ride turned up the same birds from Miss and Ala (pelican, killdeer, hawks, etc.)

New Orleans was… Err.. New Orleans (that’s all I will say.) Coming into town, remnants of Katrina are still apparent.. Destroyed houses, downed trees in yards and missing roofs are reminders of events past.

On the bright side, at least I have a Louisiana list now, oh and the beignet are still to die for! 😉
