Bergen County Birding

..Meanwhile.. at the other end of the Garden State Parkway, Sunday morning brought even more great birding! RF showed me around the Celery Farm in Allendale. As we walked the still-somewhat-snowy trails, it was clear that spring is headed our way – as mixed flocks of Brown-headed Cowbirds and Red-winged Blackbirds chatted to us. There were lots of great ducks too, including my favorite, Hooded Merganser, and Wood Ducks. We were treated to a great, unobstructed view of a Red-Shouldered Hawk patiently sitting in a tree. We had no luck seeing the resident Virginia Rail 😦 (oh well, maybe next time.)

Afterwards, we headed over to Halifax Rd, which was a little slushier and muddier, but provided more great looks at Hooded Mergs, Wood Ducks, Ring-necked ducks, Great Blue Heron and the grand finale, (just when we had almost given up) 2 Pileated Woodpeckers.

We were headed back to the car, and RF heard the flicker-like chatter, so we stopped, and sure enough, we got a beautiful look at the bird in-flight; black and white wings spread, red head forward, it truly is a beautiful, and curious bird. We immediately headed back in the direction of the bird, which flew into a cluster of trees, and a second bird joined it. AMAZING!

This is such an amazing spot. I have to admit, I should bird North Jersey much more often! Located next to Ramapo College, the trails take you around a series of water features and are surrounded by mountains.

Great birding, and great company! Thanks RF! 😀
