A funny thing happened on the way to the dentist…

Some days, you get lucky with timing. A routine trip to the dentist (who is an awesome dentist (and fellow birder)) allotted me the luxury of “chasing” 3 reported Northern Lapwings on Brynmore Road in New Egypt, NJ.

These visitors from “across the pond” have been reported in numbers on the east coast for the last few months. 3 were reported in MA (two remain) and 2 were reported in Long Island, NY (and have since departed.) One was reported in NJ as a few-hour wonder.

Yesterday’s news brought excitement to the  NJ birding community – 3- count ’em – 3 Northern Lapwings in a Cattle field in NJ!

So, before first light, I headed west through Monmouth and Ocean County’s farmlands when Rob gave a shout!  There they were!
Preening, feeding, bathing, wing stretches and all! The birders arrived, and the birds put on a show!

As an added bonus, 2 Sandhill Cranes circled overhead in the early morning hours!

Truly, a memorable morning!

Oh, and by the way, if you need a recommendation on an awesome dentist in Shrewsbury, just let me know! 🙂

Moooooo-ve over Massachusetts, now NJ's got 3 Northern Lapwings!!
