Creepy Crawly in the Dune

While walking on the beach at Sandy Hook, NJ on Sunday with our birding buddy, Tommy, we came across a “funky” caterpillar in the dunes.

Tentative ID is: Gallium Sphinx (also called the Bedstraw Hawkmoth)

What makes the ID so difficult is the fact this caterpillar can vary so much.
However, Hawk/ sphinx moth makes sense. If you ever walk the boardwalk in the summer, they are all over the lights.

Cool find!
